Project Overview

Flatland is an open-source AI initiative exploring how artificial intelligence can support human decision-making in complex railway networks. Together with SBB (Swiss Federal Railways), I designed an intelligent dispatcher interface that enables human–AI collaboration in real time.

The goal was to empower train dispatchers with clear, intuitive tools to evaluate and refine AI-generated routing suggestions — balancing punctuality, safety, and energy efficiency while maintaining human control.

Project Process

The project was a close collaboration between myself (UX designer), a product owner from SBB, and a software engineer. Drawing from real dispatcher use cases, we defined a shared vision for an AI-driven interface that enhances decision-making without replacing human expertise.

I led the UX process — from workshops and sketching to an interactive prototype — focusing on transparency, trust, and usability.
Key design elements included:

  • Real-time dashboards combining network maps, timelines, and alerts.

  • AI recommendation panels visualizing trade-offs and projected outcomes.

  • KPI controls that let dispatchers adjust the AI’s behavior.

  • Feedback mechanisms so human input continuously improves AI learning.

The design evolved through iterative discussions with the product owner and engineer, ensuring technical feasibility, data integration, and domain accuracy at every step.

Project Results

The collaboration resulted in a high-fidelity prototype of a next-generation train dispatcher interface — combining human expertise with AI support. Dispatchers can now simulate scenarios, compare AI suggestions, and provide feedback that trains the model over time.

The prototype is now ready for usability testing with professional dispatchers, marking a significant step toward human-centered AI adoption in railway operations.
